8. Run The Jewels – Run The Jewels 2
Run the Jewels 2 marks the second installment of the collaboration between producer El-P and rapper Killer Mike. You can trace their relationship back to Killer Mike’s critically-acclaimed R.A.P. Music, on which El-P was the sole producer.
On this album the evidence of their growth is apparent. The production brought forth by El-P is once again spot on. But this time around, there is a noticeable back-and-forth. Call it synergy, call it a well-oiled machine, either way they are effortlessly churning out a dangerously addictive combination of smooth, thought provoking lyrics over chaotic beats.
If you’ve had the chance to listen to Killer Mike’s first solo album, or seen him on TV, you would know he’s not one to hide his opinions. The same barefaced attitude can be observed on Run The Jewels 2 as he goes into depth about prisons, religion, police brutality, and crooked politicians.
Impressive on the first listen, it was hard to pick out songs that were my favorite. However, “Jeopardy” was a hell of a way to begin the album, Mike’s verse from “Angel Duster” finished the album on fire, and the beat from “Lie, Cheat, Steal” is just so good.
An album like this could easily be worth three easy payments of $9.99, but wait, if you call now you can get it for free! No, actually, it was released for free. – Michalicek
