For our Local Artist of the Week, we’ve decided to take Donny and Marie Osmond’s lyrics “I’m a little bit country and I’m a little bit rock and roll” to heart by profiling an Americana rock band from northern Minnesota. Allow me to introduce you to, Dedric Clark and the Social Animals.

A fellow English major, Dedric Clark started performing live while attending the University of Minnesota – Duluth. Soon after, “The Social Animals,” Tony Peterson, Boyd Smith and Roger Whittet joined Clark on stage. In 2014, the group recorded their first full length album (self-titled) with Grammy-winning producer, Ben Fowler in Nashville.

Like I mentioned, the group’s music is a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll, with a splash of blues. Clark’s light vocals have a pop-style to them, his voice reminds me a little of Ray LaMontagne but less husky.

Right now, they are in the midst of a tour promoting their album. They will be playing a couple shows in Minnesota at the end of February. My favorites from the album are “Cold” and “Knock Me Out”.
