Best Album of 2015 To: Put On When Shuffle Won’t Do and A Dictionary is Nearby.

First Bite: “The Singer Addresses His Audience”

The Decemberists have always intrigued me with their Antebellum Era-diction, florid musical arrangements and narratives to match. What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World may not have an overarching plot like Hazards of Love, but Meloy’s storyteller status is not forgotten on songs like “Till The Water’s All Long Gone.” And, I can’t help but grin every time I hear him sing “axe shampoo” on the meta “The Singer Addresses His Audience.” Especially when I know he’ll sing words like eidolon, prevaricate and ill-begotten later on the album. Although I didn’t deliberately start many music listening sessions with this album, I found myself insisting on listening to the album each time a song from it came up on shuffle.
