Best Album of 2015 To: Put On When You’re Calmly, Quietly and Comfortably Considering the Finality of Life.

First Bite: “The Only Thing”

How can something so heavy feel so light? Deliverance from a lifetime of ambivalence comes with as many ups and downs as it first delivered. Carrie & Lowell is a demonstration of that. It floats through the air to my brain, where its dynamic tenderness asks me to contemplate a flurry of emotions I can’t begin to understand. Sufjan’s lyrics, clearer than ever, are still occasionally shrouded in metaphor. The marriage of ethereal and earthly instrumentation provides some clarity, but just as easily confuses. A focused listen tangles my heartstrings. A casual listen highlights my love for Sufjan’s sense of melody.
