When a band comes out with a killer debut album I can’t help but wonder if the band has already reached their peak. It had been nearly four years since I had heard anything new from Young the Giant and I began to speculate if they’d live up to the hype their self-titled debut generated. Not only was the album well-rounded and all around great, but their live show left the fans satisfied as they headed for the exits. Fortunately, Young the Giant has so far been able to match the greatness of their first record.
By now, it’s likely you’ve heard the debut single from Mind Over Matter, “It’s About Time”. It hit the radio waves with a head of steam and is gaining air time by the day. Admittedly, at first I was shocked at what I was hearing. It was loud. There were drums, hard hitting guitars… This was not the same Young the Giant I fell in love with in 2010 – but it was good. It was really good.
The quintet out of Cali avoided a sophomore slump by tweaking their sound just enough to peak the ears of new listeners and downright intrigue years old fans. As you delve into the album deeper, many of their old sounds are still present. A classic alt/indie sound that captivates the ears of twenty-somethings worldwide.
The album currently sits at #7 on the Billboard charts and would be a huge win for the genre if it could crack the top five. You can stream the complete album below, and I strongly recommend you do.
