You could argue that there are a lot of gimmicks when it comes to one-man, throat-singing band, The Suitcase Junket. But, as soon as you hear Matt Lorenz jangling about on his homemade/repurposed instruments any feeling of schtick quickly dissipates.
Lorenz’ latest effort, Make Time explores the expansive breadth of Americana. From the gritty, distorted blues guitar on “Hot Rod God” to the the cleaner, folky warble of “Everybody Else”, the album doesn’t miss any trope associated with roots music.
Despite it’s range of sounds and sometimes sudden shifts in style, Make Time is tied together by two things – Lorenz’ strong, soulful vocals and artful, intelligent songwriting. There’s no escaping the engaging honesty of this album.
